Buying New Equipment

The supply of work equipment and machinery is governed by the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations, which require that any machinery supplied is safe and that manufacturers/suppliers must ensure that:

  1. Machinery meets specific health and safety requirements, which include the provision of sufficient instructions.
  2. A technical file for the machinery has been drawn up.
  3. A declaration of conformity for the machinery issued with it.
  4. CE marking affixed to the machinery.

Please note that when procuring equipment, you cannot assume that the supplier/manufacturer has addressed all the health and safety risks that could arise from using the equipment. You must assess yourself, and if you find a risk that is not adequately controlled, you must take steps to improve the situation. See the HSE leaflet for more information.

Core Equipment within FMHLS

Core equipment is generally infrastructural laboratory equipment that is essential for research operations and is:

  • Shared across multiple research groups or the entire facility.
  • Necessary for laboratory function, such as maintaining safety or supporting routine experimental processes.
  • Funded centrally by the Faculty, rather than purchased through individual research grants.

The Equipment Committee reviews and determines on a case-by-case basis.
